Hi everyone, I was doing some research and came across this blog. My company happens to be putting on a webinar about this very topic: HDD vs. SSD: What’s right for you?. We’ve gotten some storage experts from western digital and avnet to give us some different prospectives. You might want to check it out. It’s free to register. WED MARCH 16 at @ PM EST https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/223860737

All true but as a person working in the IT field(Break/fix). I am not in the hurry to have SSD become a standard. I have a lot of years left to work and need HDD to be around in order to keep me busy. So you see I am a little bias in that matter.

To tell you the truth all this automation and greater durability is scary if you talk about it in the sense of jobs. We need to be careful of how much automation we want in our lives. Do we want machines to do everything for us and contol us or do we want to control the machines. Sorry for getting off topic but a co-work just showed me thier new Droid phone. It is cool and scary at the same time.

I agree. And that is why Solid State Drive still usually only an “option” in laptop/pc market.

“By default” it goes only to “MacBook Air”, “Dell Adamo”, “Samsung x360″ and others “High” class laptops – super light, super thin, etc.

SSD gives all benefits what has flash memory against HDD. So first of all SSD comes when we talk about portable devices. But it brings not only enhanced data safety.

HDD spins 5400 times per minute or faster while flash NAND memory don’t have moving parts. So it gives something more:
- durability (Not only should last longet… but it is much more reliable in portable conditions – shaking, bumping, dropping )
- less heat (for me it’s one of the most important technical factors)
- probably less electromagnetic fields
- less power consumption
- less weight
- faster

As a cosumer I don’t have a need to purchase SDD drives yet. I read your article to get a feel as where things are going. It seams that in time SDD will take over HDD turf but right now HDD is my first choice. One Day my current HDD will crash and I will make a choice then.

It is the same thing with BluRay while I can afford a new player, I have no need to buy once since my XBOX 360 with HDMI cable does a good job with upconvert. So I still use standard DVD for my movie choice.

To me it is not like vinyl records Vs optical cd. When cds first came out the quality difference was like a wow factor to me and I had to have cds. It is more like my slow conversion from cd to digital mp3. The better quality of mp3 over cd was not as noticeable as vinly vs cd. WHat did it for me was that I can put tons more songs on a 700meg cd then analog cd. We are talking 20 songs vs like over 100 songs.

So there has to be something to more than faster load times and longer life to get me hooked on SDD. Maybe they will just stop making HDD over time and then I will change. Maybe I will change to see what it is all about. Maybe by the time SDD becomes close to being a standard that someting better will come along like Bluray did to HighDef players.

well, I wrote this article 2 year ago – in 2008. There are more videos and information probably now (I’m not an author of them, just found some and embeded).

Then, in 2008, It was quite big “news” for myself that I found helping to buy a new laptop for my friend.

I agree HDD is quite good thing and it’s good to have backups using even SSD. Anyway – it’s good know the option and what it gives.

Both Videos didn’t show you the specs of the HDD, was it a 7200 rpm drive or 5400. was it ide or sata.
While I am not saying SDD does not outperform a standard HDD I found the second video to be really dumb because no proper working laptop even with 5400 rpm HDD takes that long to find the OS. The second video is missleading.
I also like to point out what dummy shakes their laptop like that in the first video?

If SSD drives are better than HDD drives then in time people will buy them Just like BLURAY drives are slowly taking over the DVD market.

Let me state that like all product these SSD drives do have their problems. After they fill up a bit the drive’s internal garbage collection and wear-leveling routines kick in and their write speeds slow down.

So……
